Where once enjoying music meant first rifling through a stack of CDs or paying (and waiting) for a download, Spotify instead offers <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/company-info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 million tracks<\/a> at the touch of a button.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify has also changed how we find music. For example, personalized playlists, powered by algorithms based on the user\u2019s music taste, meant that Spotify recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/discover-weekly-how-spotify-is-changing-the-way-we-consume-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 30% of overall listening<\/a> in 2017. Tracks by little-known artists that otherwise would remain obscure are pushed to the forefront and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2017\/aug\/17\/they-could-destroy-the-album-how-spotify-playlists-have-changed-music-for-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up the charts<\/a>, thanks again to Spotify\u2019s playlists.<\/p>\n<p>But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/653926\/music-streaming-service-subscriber-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world\u2019s most popular streaming service<\/a> doesn\u2019t get access to these tunes for free \u2014 in 2021 alone, Spotify shelled out <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/digital\/news\/spotify-7-billion-music-industry-labels-publishers-2021-1235212986\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7 billion dollars<\/a> in royalties to the music industry. What you may not know is that users have a say in just how much is paid to music makers, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/dittomusic.com\/en\/blog\/how-much-does-spotify-pay-per-stream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pay-per-stream fee<\/a> generated each time a song is played.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, our analysts at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netcredit.com\/\">online lender NetCredit<\/a> got to thinking: based on local listeners all over the world, which songs are earning the most money in each country on Spotify?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How We Conducted This Study<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We first retrieved each country\u2019s \u2018weekly totals\u2019 chart from <a href=\"https:\/\/kworb.net\/spotify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kworb<\/a>, giving us figures representing the total number of streams for songs that have spent at least one week in the top weekly charts of Spotify. After sorting the songs into genres using the Spotify API, we could then discover each country\u2019s highest-earning song in each genre and overall by multiplying their total stream count by Spotify\u2019s pay-per-stream rate of $0.005 USD.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Sunflower<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Post Malone<\/strong> has <strong>made the most money<\/strong> overall (<strong>$4.5 million<\/strong> from <strong>U.S. listens<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Blinding Lights<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>The Weeknd<\/strong> is the<strong> highest-earning song<\/strong> in <strong>10 countries<\/strong> (more than any other individual song)<\/li>\n<li>Most of the <strong>highest-earning EDM songs<\/strong> are by a handful of artists, including <strong>Avicii, Elton John, SAINt JHN, the Chainsmokers <\/strong>or<strong> Ti\u00ebsto<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, <strong>top-earning hip-hop\/rap songs<\/strong> are often by <strong>local artists<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Sunflower by Post Malone Has Made the Most Money on Spotify, Thanks to U.S. Listeners<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Based on earnings generated by local plays on Spotify, we\u2019ve mapped the highest-earning song in every country. The song\u2019s global success across streaming platforms and download services also saw it awarded an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifpi.org\/the-weeknd-wins-2020s-ifpi-global-digital-single-award-for-blinding-lights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IFPI Global Digital Single Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other top-earning songs across our world map run the gamut of genres, from pop love ballads (<em><strong>Someone You Loved<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Lewis Capaldi<\/strong>) to reggaeton tunes like <em><strong>Me Reh\u00faso<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Danny Ocean<\/strong>, launched to global success by its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2017\/aug\/17\/they-could-destroy-the-album-how-spotify-playlists-have-changed-music-for-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inclusion in Spotify playlists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Songs by the Neighbourhood, the Killers and Imagine Dragons Among the Highest-Earning Rock Hits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The U.S. is a nation of rock music lovers, with the genre placed as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/475667\/streamed-music-consumption-genre-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second-most popular<\/a> for Americans to stream. But which rock song in the U.S. and other countries makes the most money from local Spotify streamers?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Sweater Weather<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>the Neighbourhood<\/strong> takes the crown in <strong>the U.S.<\/strong>, having banked <strong>$2.1 million<\/strong> from stateside streams. It\u2019s also the highest-earning in nine other countries, including <strong>Poland ($184k)<\/strong> and <strong>Romania ($27k)<\/strong>. Brits might not be surprised to learn that <em>Mr. Brightside<\/em> has earned the most in the UK (<strong>$1.2 million<\/strong>) \u2014 despite being the work of an American band, this hit song\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-56601090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enduring popularity<\/a> in the UK is something of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AskUK\/comments\/7zosad\/why_is_mrbrightside_so_popular_in_the_uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cultural fixture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <strong>Journey\u2019s<\/strong> rock anthem <em><strong>Don&#8217;t Stop Believin\u2019<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 which has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/journey-mega-hit-dont-stop-believin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renewed popularity<\/a> repeatedly over the years since its 1981 release \u2014 comes up top in <strong>Canada<\/strong> and <strong>Sweden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mix of Local Artists and International Stars Claim the Highest-Earning Hip-Hop\/Rap Songs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While hip-hop and rap may have <a href=\"https:\/\/iconcollective.edu\/hip-hop-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">originated in the U.S.<\/a>, the genre has gone global, and homegrown talent claims the highest-earning hip-hop\/rap songs in several countries. Polish rapper <strong>Kizo\u2019s<\/strong> song <em><strong>Disney<\/strong><\/em> is the highest-earning (<strong>$270k<\/strong>) in <strong>Poland<\/strong>, while Dutch rapper <strong>Frenna<\/strong> comes out on top in the Netherlands for his song <em><strong>Verleden Tijd<\/strong><\/em>. Their song <em><strong>Something Just Like This<\/strong><\/em> takes the top spot in four other countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elton John<\/strong> and <strong>Dua Lipa\u2019s<\/strong> song <em><strong>Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)<\/strong> <\/em>comes up top in 12 other countries, earning the most in <strong>Mexico<\/strong> (<strong>$602k<\/strong>). But how has streaming changed the music industry at large?<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, CD sales and digital downloads are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/billrosenblatt\/2020\/09\/14\/new-riaa-numbers-show-that-cds-are-all-but-dead-and-downloads-are-on-life-support\/?sh=360d613352d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">falling<\/a> as the number of paid music streaming subscribers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/707103\/paid-streaming-music-subscribers-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continues to rise<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/digital\/read\/spotify-has-everything-piracy-drops-as-streaming-wins-over-illegal-downloaders\/073373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Music piracy<\/a> is also declining, with factors like the <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/entertainment\/articles-reports\/2018\/08\/02\/number-britons-illegally-downloading-music-falls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low cost and ease of streaming<\/a> making platforms like Spotify the preferable option over illegal downloading. Indeed, one report revealed that access to pirated music in the EU dropped by a <a href=\"https:\/\/euipo.europa.eu\/ohimportal\/en\/web\/observatory\/online-copyright-infringement-in-eu_2021#:~:text=Main%20findings%3A,times%20per%20month%20in%202020.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staggering 81%<\/a> between 2017 and 2020. Spotify, in particular, has <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/music\/news\/spotify-turns-15-how-the-streaming-giant-has-changed-and-reinvented-the-music-industry-1234948299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disrupted Apple\u2019s monopoly<\/a> over the music industry, with Spotify counting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/653926\/music-streaming-service-subscriber-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twice the share<\/a> of subscribers as Apple Music.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Methodology &amp; Sources<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We wanted to reveal the hit song in each country that has earned its author the most money on Spotify based on its total stream count.<\/p>\n<p>We began our analysis by retrieving each country\u2019s \u2018weekly totals\u2019 chart from <a href=\"https:\/\/kworb.net\/spotify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kworb<\/a>. These figures represent the total number of streams for songs that have spent at least one week in the top weekly charts of Spotify. We used the Spotify API to sort artists into their associated genres:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>EDM = any mention of \u201celectronic dance music\u201d or \u201cEDM\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Hip-hop\/rap = any mention of either genre<\/li>\n<li>Latin = any mention of Latin (e.g., Latin pop, Latin rock) or \u201creggaeton\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Rock = any mention of rock<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We could then determine the most streamed song for each genre. We then multiplied the number of total streams for each song by Spotify\u2019s payout-per-stream figure, which equals $0.005 per stream (as sourced from <a href=\"https:\/\/dittomusic.com\/en\/blog\/how-much-does-spotify-pay-per-stream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ditto Music<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The data was collected between January 6 and 11, 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s no doubt about it: streaming services like Spotify have revolutionized the way we listen to music.
