In December 2025, the price index for groceries increased about 0.7% — that’s one of the largest monthly increases in food costs since 2022.

But one simple way to save is by switching from big name brand products to store-brand generic alternatives.

And that’s exactly what the research team here at NetCredit decided to look at for our latest study. To help consumers reduce their monthly expenses, we calculated the price difference between the name-brand and store-brand equivalents of hundreds of products at Walmart, Target and Kroger and compiled a top-10 list for different food categories, highlighting the store-brand items with the biggest average savings across the three stores.

Read on to see where you can save the most money by switching.

What we did

We built a list of 171 common grocery products at Walmart, Kroger and Target and calculated the price differences between the most recognizable name brands for each product and their store-brand equivalents. We then aggregated these differences by product across the retailers to find the average savings available by switching to the store-brand version of each item.

Key Findings: Name-brand vs. generic foods

We found some of the biggest savings in the freezer aisle, led by store-brand ice cream sandwiches, with a 57% saving on average across Walmart, Kroger and Target compared to name brand equivalents.

The largest single price gap was in beverages, where store-brand sports hydration drinks offered a 74% saving at Walmart.

In the dairy aisle, repeat purchases highlighted major value in switching to store brands: buying a gallon of store-brand milk equaled a 61% saving on a average across average across Walmart, Kroger and Target.

Pantry staples carried heavy brand premiums. A big-name brand ketchup was 67% more expensive than the store-brand version on average at average across Walmart, Kroger and Target.

Store-brand spaghetti pasta can save shoppers 49% on each purchase on average across average across Walmart, Kroger and Target, making everyday meals far more affordable.

Store-brand powdered drink mix offers the biggest savings

We started by analyzing prices of store brand items at Walmart, Kroger and Target to see what savings shoppers could make by switching from name brands.

Our price-comparison study found that buying store-brand hydration sports drinks offers real value for money, with savings of over 74% at Walmart when compared to name brands. That’s the biggest saving in the study.

Store-brand fruity cereal loops came in a close second — buying these instead of the more well-known brands can save shoppers 69% at Walmart.

Our research team discovered savings on a range of core grocery items, including milk, pasta and cheese. For example, a gallon of store-brand whole milk yields average savings of 61% across Walmart, Kroger and Target, and store-label cheddar cheese and pasta average out with an almost 50% saving next to the big-brand alternatives, when compared across all three stores.

The question is, will you taste the difference? The research says probably not. Several studies show that store brands hold up in terms of taste and quality. A 2025 consumer study published in Produce Business found that over seven out of 10 shoppers couldn’t tell store brands from name brands when labels were removed. The survey also revealed that 84% of shoppers now trust store brands as much as or more than national brands in terms of quality.

Store brands deliver savings of up to 63% on popular snack foods depending where you shop

Next up, we switched focus to a specific grocery aisle, starting with snacks. Looking across popular snack items, our study highlights how store-brand snacks are consistently cheaper than name-brand versions, with savings ranging from 30% to over 60%.

The biggest savings were on store-brand tortilla chips at Walmart, Kroger and Target (63%). Shoppers can save even more by pairing them with a store-brand nacho cheese dip, which costs 46% less than name-brand dips on average across the three stores. Families looking to trim the weekly budget on lunchbox staples can also benefit from the switch: store-brand pudding cups and cheese crackers can each deliver savings of over 30%, as averaged across Walmart and Kroger.

For a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, buying store-brand cashew nuts and trail mix will save you over 40% on each purchase (averaged across the three stores) — and keep you away from the vending machines.

Huge discounts on store-brand cereals

The next part of our analysis looked at the breakfast aisle. Our study shows substantial savings when consumers switch from name-brand breakfast items to store-brand alternatives. Store-brand fruity cereal loops delivered real value, offering a massive saving of 69% at Walmart.

Store-brand plain cornflakes delivered average savings of just under 65% at Walmart and Kroger, one of the biggest price gaps in the breakfast category. We also found savings of over 60% on store-brand frosted shredded wheat cereal at those stores.

We analyzed the price of store-brand buttermilk biscuit dough at Walmart and Kroger, finding an average 36% saving. And leaving the first (and most important) thing till last, we also identified an average 33% saving at Walmart, Kroger and Target for those willing to try a store-brand coffee to kick start the day.

Study shows real value in switching to store-brand baked goods

Our next stop was the bakery aisle. At Kroger, we found strong value opportunities on store-brand French baguettes and cheesecakes, which both offer savings of up to 50% when compared with equivalent name-brand products.

The savings stretched across several other popular bakery items, with English muffins at Walmart and Kroger and hot dog buns at all three stores delivering average savings of 45% and 34%, respectively. And store-brand staples like sourdough bread and burrito-size tortilla at Walmart, Kroger and Target, and hard taco shells at

Walmart and Kroger bread mean there are savings of upwards of 31% to be made on more specialty items if shoppers are willing to swap from name brands.

The bakery aisle is where shoppers can find some real price value without compromising on quality. Store brands often make their bread within the same regional bakeries as national labels. They can also price baked goods lower due to more direct relationships with manufacturers, meaning the price disparity won’t translate into a significant taste difference. Additionally, breads are simple to make and contain just a few basic ingredients, so premium brands can offer little extra taste value for that additional cost.

Store brands cut prices on the items that every pantry needs

This next chart looks at pantry staples, those small additions to the weekly shopping basket that add the perfect finishing touches to a meal or snack. We found real savings across 10 everyday pantry items, including the non-negotiables like ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. Of these, the biggest discount was found on ketchup, where shoppers can save 67% on average across the three stores by switching from the big-name ketchup brands.

In addition to savings on cookout staples, shoppers can save on those pantry essentials that are ideal for whipping up a quick but hearty meal or filling lunch. For example, store-brand spaghetti pasta equates to an average 49% saving at Walmart, Kroger and Target. There’s also a 49% saving available on mac and cheese at all three stores and a 38% saving on cans of tomato soup at Walmart and Kroger.

Study highlights a huge price gap between store-brand and name-brand sports drinks

The following section shows the biggest savings on store-brand beverages. We looked at popular soda-style drinks, fruit juices and hot beverages.

In categories where recipes are simple — water, tea and powdered mixes — it makes sense that discount options won’t really change the taste despite the price gap. Take bottled water. All brands must follow the same regulations, meaning the only real difference between big brands and store brands is the 29% you can save on average at Walmart, Kroger and Target by switching.

Additionally, you’ll see the same list of ingredients on the back of big name brand and store-brand sports hydration drinks. But there’s a big difference when it comes to the price label; store-brand sports hydration drinks are priced with a 74.3% saving at Kroger. That’s a huge saving on a drink designed for function and hydration rather than flavor.

A 44% store-brand saving on a true American classic in the dairy section

Now we’re in the dairy section, looking at savings on those repeat staple purchases that can take a large chunk out of the weekly grocery budget. We found significant savings on a gallon of store-brand milk, including whole milk and 2% milk. Both options came in with a store-brand saving well over 50% on average across the three stores.

Given that these items can be bought several times during the week, this is one of the price gaps that could add up to significant savings on a monthly and annual basis. And the same applies to store-brand cheese. Cream cheese and shredded cheddar both delivered average savings of over 40% across the three stores. Spray cheese is even more budget-friendly, with an average store-brand saving of 53% at Walmart and Kroger.

Finally, there’s another big discount on a true icon of American comfort food — sliced cheese. The go-to cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches and cheeseburgers saves shoppers an average of 44% when bought in the store-brand version at at Walmart, Kroger and Target.

Ice cream and french fries have the largest store-brand savings in freezer aisle

Our final chart turns the attention to the frozen-food aisle, home to many convenience foods and favorites for busy households. And given that U.S. consumers spend almost $88 billion per year in this section, we highlighted the 10 store-brand items with the biggest savings.

It’s the frozen sweet treats where shoppers can save the most money by replacing brand names with store brands. With the biggest saving in this section of the study, store-brand ice cream sandwiches came in with a saving of 57%. There was also a 38% saving on tubs of vanilla ice cream and a 35% store-brand saving on popsicles.

These savings all represent the averages across Walmart, Kroger and Target.

And stocking up the freezer with store-brand fries and burritos will lead to savings averaging around 32.5% across the three stores. It’s another clear data point that suggests switching to store brands when browsing the freezer aisle is an easy way to make significant savings while maintaining the same convenience provided by frozen foods.

Practical tips to make the most of store-brand savings

It’s clear that making the switch to store brands equals significant savings on the weekly shop in every aisle. However, this doesn’t mean shoppers need to take a full store-brand-only approach. Instead, they can:

Stick to store brands for high-volume items. Switch to store brands for items such as milk, soda and bread. These items can offer the greatest potential savings because they are purchased several times a week, so small savings can significantly reduce the monthly grocery budget.

Focus on items where you won’t taste the difference. Bottled water and sports drinks prioritize function. Flavor is less important when you’re hydrating first thing in the morning or are thirsty for a post- or pre-workout energy drink. Any extra you pay for the brand name may not be worth it when the store-brand alternative will hit the same spot.

Don’t ditch your favorites. Finally, try a gradual approach, swapping out a handful of brand-name items for store brands while keeping the brand names you really enjoy. Experiment with different condiments and items to find the ideal sweet spot between saving money and still enjoying every meal.

Methodology

We carried out manual research on 171 products at three of the largest retailers in the U.S.: Walmart, Kroger and Target.

First, we built a list of products from the following categories: Frozen, Bakery & Bread, Snacks, Pantry, Dairy Cheese & Eggs, Beverages and Breakfast & Cereal. We sourced the prices and sizes of the most recognizable brands for each product. For each product at each retailer, we calculated the price difference between the name-brand and store-brand equivalents, then aggregated these differences by product across retailers.

We retrieved prices from 76201, TX, to keep the cost of living and price levels uniform across the dataset.

Data is correct as of January 2026.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food prices are rising in line with overall inflation.
