Whether you’re entering the workforce for the first time, considering a career change or looking for ways to increase your income, exploring degree-free career paths can open the door to new opportunities.

And there may be new opportunities that didn’t exist before. For example, public sector employers in 26 states and territories re-evaluated their requirements, with the government in Virginia alone increasing the number of no-degree jobs from 58% to 90% between 2019 and 2024. Many private firms followed suit.

So what kind of jobs should professionals without a degree look for? Online lender NetCredit analyzed Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data at a national, state and metro-area level to find the ones with the best pay overall and compared them to all jobs locally.

What we did

We analyzed BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for jobs that don’t require a degree, according to the BLS Occupational Handbook. The best-paid non-degree job nationally is Nuclear Power Reactor Operator, with an average salary of $122,824. This role requires only a high school diploma or equivalent at the application stage, but successful applicants must then undertake extensive on-the-job training for a license to operate.

Another top-ten role is Elevator/Escalator Installer/Repairer, with a national average salary of $104,874. This is the closest gap between degree and no-degree roles for any state.

North Dakota (81.7%) and Mississippi (80.3%) are the closest followers, while no-degree jobs in Maryland offer the lowest return compared to the state average (66.3%).

In 2025, Wyoming set a target for 67% of high school leavers to continue to some higher form of qualification. Learning is its own reward, and college study can help you build a network, try ideas in a safe environment and figure out what you really want to do. Plus, even for no-degree jobs, managers may compare resumes and opt for the one with a degree.

But for many, a degree may be unsuitable, undesirable or financially unfeasible. If you don’t have a degree and you’re looking for work, try these four tips:

Optimize your resume. Make it neat and structured, and lay out your experience so it’s easy to evaluate. Give evidence of your skills using short examples to back up each claim.

Don’t rule out “degree preferred” jobs. If you can prove your experience and your will to learn, you may be a better match for such a role — especially if you indicate your enthusiasm to undertake professional development.

Use your network. Employers want employees they can trust. Look for employers you know personally or ask professionals you know for an introduction or recommendation to potential employers. Use meetups and alumni groups to make a personal impact on people who might help you get a break now or in the future.

Structure your resume for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Optimize your resume by using keywords and phrases from the job description, spell out words in full, and adapt your resume for each specific role for which you apply.

Whatever you do, remember that a degree is not just about getting a job. As Wyoming student Daryl Woody, who took the long route through the military and maintenance contracting work before starting his degree, told the New York Times: “The advice that I’ve been getting from all of the instructors has always been, ‘Do not let the good job take you from your education.’”

Methodology

First, we retrieved data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) 2024 Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates at a national, state and metropolitan area level. We also identified the occupations that don’t require an associated degree as per the BLS Occupational Handbook and retrieved the average yearly salary for each role.

For the state and metropolitan area figures, we filtered out occupations that account for fewer than 0.2 per 1,000 jobs (fewer than one in 5,000 jobs). We then isolated the best-paid no-degree jobs nationally, by state and by metropolitan area (focusing on large metropolitan areas of over one million inhabitants).

Finally, we determined the best states and metro areas for no-degree jobs based on how close the average wage for these jobs was to the local average wage (across all occupations). We used a weighted average to calculate the average wage of a no-degree job in each state to account for the large differences in employment rates by occupation.

Data is correct as of May 2026.

A college degree isn’t the only path to a rewarding — and high-paying — career.
